A consistent pursuit of my photographic work over the last 3 decades has been about removing the subject from the comfortable and known environments, and placing them elsewhere that is a drastic contrast to what they are used to. My love for creating art with Ballet over those 3 decades is also widely known, with personal projects growing in themes and complexities over the years.
Two days ago it was International Dance Day, and I created this series in anticipation of it. I decided to remove the ballerinas and dancers far away from the safe havens of their indoor studios and high ceiling rooms – to be on top of a windswept hill at sunset, over looking the city. To be out of their comfort zones and familiar senses, and instead touched by the biting wind and glow of the setting sun.
It was a picnic to remember.
